The Firefighter Steven Coakley Foundation is presenting the "Flags and Lights of Remembrance"
in honor of all those lost on September 11, 2001. The public is invited to join us on Thursday, September 10th to help place 2,977 flags in the shape of the Twin Towers along with attaching photo cards of each victim in memory of all those that were lost on 9/11. Including a mobile Display of a Steel Beam recovered from the World Trade Center.

For this 25th Anniversary year, Duke Energy, JLL and Barringer Construction have sponsored the addition of a powerful lighting display that will be visible from miles away in the Uptown Charlotte skyline.
The two massive pillars of light will rise into the night sky from dusk until dawn on September 10th and 11th, creating a striking visual memorial serving as a visible symbol of remembrance, resilience and collective reflection

Friday September 11, 2026 - 8:30 am
The Firefighter Steven Coakley Foundation will hold a solemn memorial gathering at the site of the “Flags and Lights of Remembrance” at Romare Bearden Park beginning at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony will include the tolling of a bell and moments of silence at the key milestone times of 8:46 am, 9:03 am, 9:37 am, 9:59 am, 10:03 am, 10:28 am, and 10:30am. A steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center will be displayed as a symbol of honor and remembrance. All members of the community are invited to attend, reflect, and pay tribute.
We will have the honor of hosting our guest speaker John Howell this year. John lost his brother George DiPasquale who was a member FDNY on 9/11

The "Flags of Remembrance" will be removed on Monday, September 14th beginning at 9:00 am, we welcome any help.

“We will never forget …” best describes the mission of the foundation. Not just about what happened to so many people on September 11, 2001 and how our lives have changed but “we will never forget” about how Steve and so many firefighters lived their lives and were always there to help us. The charter of the foundation is to provide educational scholarships, donate funds and/or equipment to local emergency services to increase the safety of the public and first responders, provide a mobile memorial of WTC Steel and hold memorials to honor Firefighter Steven Coakley, FDNY Engine 217 & those lost on 9/11.
