Six of nine seats on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education are on the ballot this fall, offering voters an important opportunity to shape the future of public education in our community. To help voters make informed choices, WFAE and the League of Women Voters of Charlotte Mecklenburg (LWVCM) will host a Candidate Forum on Monday, October 27, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM at the WFAE Center for Civics and Community Engagement, 301 East 7th Street in Charlotte.

Moderated by WFAE Education Reporter James Farrell, the forum will feature candidates from Districts 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. District 3 is uncontested as a result of the primary election and the at-large seats are not up for election this year, as their terms have not yet expired. The CMS Board of Education is responsible for hiring the superintendent, approving the district’s budget, and establishing policies that guide teaching, learning, and safety for more than 140,000 students.

“This forum is an opportunity for residents to hear directly from the people who will make key decisions affecting students, teachers, and families across Mecklenburg County,” said Jane Hoffmann, President of the LWVCM. “An informed vote is a powerful vote.”

The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. The event will also be livestreamed on WFAE. For more information and to register, visit: https://www.wfae.org/candidateforum

This event is nonpartisan and educational, designed to give voters the opportunity to hear directly from leaders involved in transportation, funding, and policy implementation. Attendees will be able to ask questions and learn how the sales tax could affect infrastructure, mobility, and community access.
