McColl Park Grand Opening
McColl Park Brings New Energy to the Heart of Uptown
The corner of Trade and Tryon, one of Charlotte’s most iconic squares has been thoughtfully reimagined. What was once a familiar spot in the Uptown landscape has been transformed into something welcoming and full of vibrancy. Say hello to McColl Park, a beautifully redesigned public space that brings new energy to the center of the city and our beloved neighborhood.
The park was designed through a collaboration between Bolton & Menk and Hood Design Studio, led by nationally renowned designer and Charlotte native, Walter Hood. From the start, the design team wanted this space to reflect Charlotte’s past, present, and future. The design reflects area’s deep roots, including the city’s Indigenous history, the American Revolution, and the evolution of this very corner. It was also shaped by the community's ideas and priorities for a public space today.
McColl Park invites people to gather, reflect, and connect. It features an impressive public art installation, a dedication wall honoring one of Charlotte’s great civic leaders, and thoughtfully designed spaces that feel both playful and serene.
Hugh McColl played a major role in shaping the modern Charlotte skyline and the civic spirit behind it. This park is a tribute to that legacy, and it also serves as a welcoming space for everyone. Whether you work nearby, live in Uptown, or just enjoy spending time in the city, McColl Park offers a new, people-focused place to be.
Come see it in person! The grand opening celebration is happening on Saturday, June 21, from 12 to 4 p.m. and it’s free and open to everyone, with live music, food trucks, and a short program featuring Mayor Vi Lyles and Mr. McColl. Of course, you don’t have to attend the celebration to enjoy the park. It’s open daily and worth a visit anytime.
Getting there is simple. The Gold Line streetcar passes right by the park, and the LYNX Blue Line light rail stop is just a block away. If you're driving, there’s plenty of parking in nearby decks, and many street spaces are free on Saturdays.
McColl Park is a reminder that even a small space in the heart of the city can offer something meaningful. Take a walk through. Sit for a while. You might find yourself feeling more connected to Uptown and the people who make it what it is today.
